The situation in Ukraine is worsening by the hour. We follow the news with horror and compassion. The Russian invasion is a direct attack on freedom and democracy and is at odds with the fundamental values we stand for in the Netherlands and at Fontys. It is exciting for all of us and especially for the people in the eastern region of Europe.
Our main task and responsibility now, is to offer help to students and employees from this region who study or work at Fontys. Not only to Ukrainian students. Also Russian, Belarusian students and employees and even those from neighboring countries live in great uncertainty about the consequences of this war for their own future and that of family and friends. It is good to see that programs are maintaining close personal contact with these groups. It is clear from the interviews that they live in great fear and have many questions. This war has only losers. We are here for all our students and staff, especially when they are in need or in fear. In these uncertain times, we want to offer them a safe environment. Therefore, let’s continue to talk to each other, with respect for everyone’s personal circumstances.
Meanwhile, universities and colleges have decided to freeze formal and institutional collaborations with educational and knowledge institutions in the Russian Federation and in Belarus with immediate effect until further notice. This decision followed an urgent appeal by the Minister of Education, Culture and Science. We support this call and are going to freeze our exchange agreements with four Russian institutions. We regret the impact this has on education and the personal ties that have been established. We hope for better times and opportunities to work together in the future.
On the webpage www.fontys.nl/fontyshelpt information has been brought together for students and staff about the situation in Ukraine and the various bodies to which students and staff can turn with questions. Of course they can also turn to student counsellors, student psychologists or confidential advisers.

De situatie in Oekraïne verslechtert met het uur. We volgen het nieuws vol afschuw en medeleven. De Russische invasie is een rechtstreekse aanval op vrijheid en democratie en staat haaks op de fundamentele waarden waar wij in Nederland en bij Fontys voor staan. Het is voor ons allemaal spannend en vooral voor de mensen in de oostelijke regio van Europa.
Onze belangrijkste taak en verantwoordelijkheid nu, is hulp te bieden aan studenten en medewerkers uit deze regio die bij Fontys studeren of werken. Niet alleen aan de Oekraïense studenten. Ook Russische, Belarussische studenten en medewerkers en zelfs die uit aangrenzende landen leven in grote onzekerheid over de gevolgen van deze oorlog voor hun eigen toekomst en die van familie en vrienden. Het is goed om te zien dat opleidingen nauw persoonlijk contact met deze groepen onderhouden. Uit de gesprekken blijkt dat zij in grote angst leven en veel vragen hebben. Deze oorlog kent alleen maar verliezers. Wij zijn er voor al onze studenten en medewerkers, zeker wanneer zij in nood of in angst verkeren. In deze onzekere tijden willen we hen een veilige omgeving bieden. Laten we daarom juist nu ook met elkaar in gesprek blijven, met respect voor ieders persoonlijke omstandigheden.
Inmiddels hebben de universiteiten en hogescholen besloten om de formele en institutionele samenwerkingen met onderwijs- en kennisinstellingen in de Russische Federatie en in Belarus per direct tot nader order te bevriezen. Dit besluit volgde op een dringende oproep van de minister van OCW. We steunen deze oproep en gaan onze uitwisselingsovereenkomsten met vier Russische instellingen bevriezen. We betreuren de gevolgen die dit heeft voor het onderwijs en de persoonlijke banden die er zijn ontstaan. We hopen op betere tijden en mogelijkheden tot samenwerken in de toekomst.
Op de webpagina www.fontys.nl/fontyshelpt is voor studenten en medewerkers informatie bij elkaar gebracht over de situatie in de Oekraïne en de verschillende instanties waar studenten en medewerkers terecht kunnen met vragen. Uiteraard kunnen zij ook terecht bij studentendecanen, studentenpsychologen of vertrouwenspersonen.
