Interessante innovaties kwamen aan bod tijdens Innovations Insight van Fontys ICT; hét showcase event waar studenten hun projecten presenteerden aan een breed publiek van experts uit de industrie, partnerbedrijven, medestudenten en docenten. Van een AI-chatbot die helpt bij het kopen van (tweedehands) auto’s tot een simulatie van bevallingsapparatuur voor medisch personeel—de variëteit aan ideeën en toepassingen was indrukwekkend.
In Tilburg vond het evenement voor de tweede keer plaats in MindLabs. Studenten van Fontys ICT werkten samen met Fontys Journalistiek en het Practoraat van ROC Tilburg om hun werk te presenteren. Het enthousiasme was groot, zowel bij de studenten als bij de bezoekers, die de creativiteit en maatschappelijke relevantie van de projecten waardeerden. Een opvallend project was de simulatie van bevallingsapparatuur. Studenten creëerden een trainingsmodule waarmee medisch personeel zich kan voorbereiden op het begeleiden van kritische bevallingen. Het project wordt in het komende semester verder ontwikkeld; een mooi voorbeeld van hoe onderwijs en praktijk hand in hand gaan.
In Eindhoven werden er op het Fontys ICT InnovationLab maar liefst 130 projecten aan geïnteresseerden getoond. De thema’s die centraal stonden—AI & Data, Immersive Technologies, Smart Systems, Future Software Tech en Cyber Security—zijn stuk voor stuk gebieden die van grote betekenis zijn voor de toekomst van technologie, en ook voor de Brainport-regio. Elk project draagt op zijn eigen manier bij aan de maatschappij, of het nu gaat om het verbeteren van de zorg, het bevorderen van duurzaamheid of het versterken van de veiligheid.
Een van de projecten die de aandacht trok, was AutoAdvisor, een AI-chatbot die particulieren helpt bij het kopen van (tweedehands) auto’s. Met behulp van AI wordt het proces vereenvoudigd, waardoor consumenten beter geïnformeerd een keuze kunnen maken. Student Gerke Reitz, de bedenker en ontwikkelaar van de chatbot, vertelt trots: “Ik wilde mijn twee passies, auto’s en software engineering, combineren in een project. Dat ik deze creativiteit kwijt kan bij mijn opleiding vind ik heel waardevol.”
Daarnaast ontwikkelden Media studenten een app die paardensporters helpt de gezondheid en prestaties van hun paarden realtime te monitoren. Het project maakt het mogelijk om de zorg voor het dier tijdens trainingen en wedstrijden te verbeteren; een sterk voorbeeld van hoe technologie in de sportwereld het verschil kan maken.
SPARC Awards: technologisch talent bekroond
Het evenement werd in Eindhoven afgesloten met de SPARC Awards, waar de beste en meest innovatieve projecten in drie categorieën werden bekroond: technische innovatie, maatschappelijke impact en creativiteit. De winnende projecten kwamen uit verschillende hoeken van het ICT-vakgebied, en toonden aan hoe breed de technologische vooruitgang is.
Zo ontwikkelden studenten Game Design een toolkit waarmee bedrijven hun eigen mixed reality (AR) games kunnen maken; een grensverleggend project op het gebied van gametechnologie. Een andere groep studenten werkte samen met het Ministerie van Defensie aan een drone simulator die helpt bij het verbeteren van de tactische vaardigheden van drone-operators. Het doel was om een zo realistisch mogelijke simulatie van militaire operaties te ontwikkelen.
Een ander winnend project was MeldMonitor, een applicatie voor de Nationale Politie die social media berichten monitort, categoriseert en doorstuurt als officiële melding. Dit project speelt in op de groeiende trend waarbij jongeren steeds vaker via social media om hulp vragen, in plaats van via traditionele kanalen. Het project maakt duidelijk hoe technologie en sociale trends elkaar kunnen versterken om de veiligheid te verbeteren.
Kortom: we kijken terug op een succesvolle editie van het evenement. De getoonde innovaties en projecten zijn niet alleen een blijk van het talent dat in de regio wordt gekweekt, maar ook van de impact die onderwijs kan hebben op de samenleving. Het Fontys ICT InnovationLab en blijft zich ontwikkelen tot een broedplaats van nieuwe ideeën die de toekomst vormgeven.

Innovations Insight: students present inspiring projects
Interesting innovations were showcased at Fontys ICT’s Innovations Insight; the showcase event where students presented their projects to a wide audience of industry experts, partner companies, fellow students and teachers. From an AI chatbot that helps buy (used) cars to a simulation of childbirth equipment for medical staff-the variety of ideas and applications was impressive.
In Tilburg, the event took place for the second time at MindLabs. Fontys ICT students collaborated with Fontys Journalism and the Practorate of ROC Tilburg to present their work. Enthusiasm was high, both among the students and visitors, who appreciated the creativity and social relevance of the projects. One notable project was the simulation of childbirth equipment. Students created a training module that allows medical staff to prepare for supervising critical deliveries. The project will be further developed in the coming semester; a great example of how education and practice go hand in hand.
In Eindhoven, as many as 130 projects were shown to interested parties at the Fontys ICT InnovationLab. The central themes-AI & Data, Immersive Technologies, Smart Systems, Future Software Tech and Cyber Security-are all areas of great significance for the future of technology, and also for the Brainport region. Each project contributes to society in its own way, whether to improve healthcare, promote sustainability or strengthen security.

Using AI, the process is simplified, allowing consumers to make a more informed choice. Student Gerke Reitz, the chatbot’s creator and developer, proudly says: ‘I wanted to combine my two passions, cars and software engineering, in a project. I find it very valuable that I can express this creativity in my studies.’
In addition, Media students developed an app that helps equestrian athletes monitor the health and performance of their horses in real time. The project makes it possible to improve animal care during training and competitions; a strong example of how technology can make a difference in the sports world.
SPARC Awards: technological talent awarded
The event concluded in Eindhoven with the SPARC Awards, where the best and most innovative projects were awarded in three categories: technical innovation, social impact and creativity. The winning projects came from different corners of the ICT field, demonstrating the breadth of technological advances. For example, Game Design students developed a toolkit that allows companies to create their own mixed reality (AR) games; a groundbreaking project in the field of game technology. Another group of students worked with the Ministry of Defence on a drone simulator that helps improve the tactical skills of drone operators. The aim was to develop the most realistic simulation of military operations possible.
Another winning project was MeldMonitor, an application for the National Police that monitors, categorises and forwards social media posts as official reports. This project responds to the growing trend of young people increasingly asking for help through social media, rather than traditional channels. The project highlights how technology and social trends can reinforce each other to improve safety.
In short: we look back on a successful edition of the event. The innovations and projects on show not only demonstrate the talent being cultivated in the region, but also the impact education can have on society. The Fontys ICT InnovationLab and continues to develop into a breeding ground for new ideas that are shaping the future.
