(English below) In een onlangs door het college van bestuur goedgekeurd visiedocument zijn vier uitgangspunten voor internationalisering vastgelegd. In onze steeds mondialer wordende regio’s ontwikkelt Fontys talenten en kennis, met en voor het werkveld. Ook zien we dat onze studenten zich tijdens hun opleiding meer willen richten op internationaal maatschappelijke vraagstukken. Internationalisering heeft grote waarde voor onze studenten en de maatschappij en is daarmee een essentieel onderdeel van ons onderwijs en onderzoek. Dit vraagt om een visie met heldere uitgangspunten. Aan de hand van deze uitgangspunten wordt in 2024 beleid ontwikkeld dat richting geeft aan het Fontys for society-speerpunt internationalisering.
De visie ‘Internationalisering’ kwam tot stand op basis van gesprekken met docenten, onderwijskundigen, onderzoekers en het management van Fontys. De visie beschrijft de ambities van Fontys op het gebied van internationalisering voor onderwijs, onderzoek en de ondersteunende processen. De visie is leidend in het ontwikkelen van beleid op onder andere het (internationale) opleidingenportfolio, taal, werving en studentenhuisvesting.
Internationale oriëntatie
Fontys wil dat iedere student internationale oriëntatie opdoet en interculturele competenties verwerft. Werken en wonen in onze regio’s vraagt van werknemers dat zij interculturele competenties en internationale kennis ontwikkeld hebben. Het is de opdracht van Fontys om studenten hiermee uit te rusten zodat zij klaar zijn voor hun plaats in de maatschappij als werkende professionals. Daarom krijgen deze aspecten een verankerde positie binnen de leeromgeving en leeruitkomsten van alle opleidingen.
Anderstalig opleidingsaanbod
Fontys leidt primair op voor de Nederlandse samenleving en draagt vanuit daar bij aan het oplossen van wereldwijde, maatschappelijke uitdagingen. Daar waar tekorten bestaan in onze samenleving én het arbeidsmarktperspectief van internationale studenten groot is, past een anderstalig opleidingsaanbod.
Fontys heeft oog voor de huidige politieke discussie die in Nederland wordt gevoerd ten aanzien van de verengelsing van het hoger onderwijs. Samen met de onderwijspartners in het hoger onderwijs brengen we het huidige anderstalige aanbod in beeld. We hebben hierbij, naast de toegankelijkheid en doelmatigheid van ons onderwijs, oog voor het welzijn en arbeidsmarktperspectief van onze studenten, het werkveld en de maatschappij. Door proactief regie te nemen zal Fontys ook in de toekomst haar verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor haar maatschappelijke opdracht.
Onderzoek
Het internationale perspectief van onderzoek en de internationale onderzoekssamenwerking wordt versterkt door het maken van gerichte keuzes. Internationalisering van ons onderzoek moet bijdragen aan de kwaliteit en kwantiteit van het praktijkgerichte onderzoek op de onderzoeksthema’s van Fontys. Een stevige nationale kennisbasis en samenwerking is een voorwaarde voor iedere internationale samenwerking.
Organisatie
Ten slotte richten we onze organisatie zodanig in dat we vanuit onderwijs, onderzoek en ondersteunende processen onze visie op internationalisering kunnen stimuleren, versterken en waarborgen.
Maatschappelijke discussie
Met deze visie op internationalisering geeft Fontys een duidelijk signaal af over de waarde die zij hecht aan alle aspecten van internationalisering. Joep Houterman, voorzitter van het college van bestuur, verstuurde op 30 november een brief over onze visie naar de demissionair minister van onderwijs (zie pdf rechtsboven op deze pagina).

Fontys presents vision of internationalisation
A vision document recently approved by the Executive Board established four guiding principles for internationalisation. In our increasingly global regions, Fontys develops talent and knowledge, with and for the professional field. We also see our students wanting to focus more on international social issues during their studies. Internationalisation has great value for our students and society, making it an essential part of our teaching and research. This requires a vision with clear principles. Based on these guiding principles, policies will be developed in 2024 that will guide Fontys for Society’s focal point of internationalisation.
The ‘Internationalisation’ vision came about on the basis of discussions with lecturers, educationalists, researchers, and Fontys management. The vision describes Fontys’ internationalisation ambitions for education, research, and the supporting processes. The vision is guiding the development of policies on the national and international education portfolios, language, recruitment, and student housing, among others.
International orientation
Fontys wants every student to gain international orientation and intercultural competencies. To work and live in our regions, workers must have intercultural competencies and international knowledge. It is Fontys’ mission to equip students with this so that they are ready to take their place in society as working professionals. Therefore, these aspects are given an embedded position within the learning environment and learning outcomes of all study programmes.
Foreign-language programmes
While educating primarily for Dutch society, Fontys also contributes to solving global societal challenges. Where there are shortages in our society and where the job market prospects of international students are high, a foreign-language education is appropriate.
Fontys is mindful of the current political discussion taking place in the Netherlands regarding the anglicisation of higher education. Together with educational partners in higher education, we are mapping out current foreign-language Degree programmes. In doing so, in addition to the accessibility and efficiency of our education, we are mindful of the wellbeing and employability of our students, the professional field and society. By taking proactive direction, Fontys will take responsibility for its social mission, now and in the future.
Research
The international perspective of research and international research cooperation is strengthened by making targeted choices. Internationalisation of our research should contribute to the quality and quantity of practice-based research in Fontys’ research themes. A solid national knowledge base and cooperation are prerequisites for any international cooperation.
Organisation
Finally, we design our organisation in such a way that we can encourage, strengthen and guarantee our vision of internationalisation on the basis of education, research and support processes.
Societal discussion
With this vision of internationalisation, Fontys is sending a clear message about the value it places on all aspects of internationalisation. On 30 November, chairman of the Executive Board Joep Houterman sent a letter about our vision to the outgoing Minister of Education (see PDF at top right of this page).
