(English version below) Twee projecten van Fontys hebben subsidie toegekend gekregen vanuit de Regieorgaan SIA-regeling Netwerkontwikkeling Richting Europa 2026. Met de financiering bouwen onderzoekers aan sterke Europese samenwerkingsverbanden die de basis vormen voor toekomstige internationale onderzoeksprojecten en Europese subsidieaanvragen.
Regieorgaan SIA heeft in deze subsidieronde 30 projecten geselecteerd die zich richten op het versterken van Europese onderzoekssamenwerking. Elk project ontvangt maximaal € 40.000 voor het ontwikkelen van duurzame netwerken tussen hogescholen, kennisinstellingen, bedrijven en maatschappelijke partners in Europa.
The European Community Research Consortium
Het project The European Community Research Consortium richt zich op het versterken van kennis over gemeenschappen, community development en community-based research. Communities spelen een steeds grotere rol bij maatschappelijke vraagstukken zoals de energietransitie, klimaatadaptatie, stedelijke ontwikkeling en gezondheid. Het consortium wil uitgroeien tot hét Europese multidisciplinaire netwerk waar kennis over communities wordt ontwikkeld, gedeeld en toegepast.
Eric Schoenmakers, senior onderzoeker bij het lectoraat Sociale Veerkacht werkt hierin samen met Thomas More University of Applied Sciences (België), University of Southern Denmark (SDU) en IRIS-CC. De partners brengen expertise samen vanuit onder meer sociale wetenschappen, community psychologie, bestuurskunde en gezondheidswetenschappen.
Data Driven Circular Economy in Electrical Mobility
Het tweede gehonoreerde project, Data Driven Circular Economy in Electrical Mobility bouwt aan een Europees praktijkgericht onderzoeksnetwerk rond de circulaire transitie van de markt voor elektrische voertuigen (EV’s). Veel mkb-bedrijven ervaren echter uitdagingen door versnipperde databronnen, beperkte toegang tot technische informatie en verschillende standaarden tussen fabrikanten. Hierdoor blijven kansen voor hergebruik, reparatie, revisie en recycling van EV-componenten vaak onbenut.
Onder leiding van Fontys brengt het consortium onderzoekers samen van Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Halmstad University (Zweden), Thomas More University of Applied Sciences (België) en Fontys. Het netwerk wordt gecoördineerd door Associate Lector Dr. Devrim Eskiyerli en combineert de expertise van drie Fontys-lectoraten:
- Business Innovation
- Sustainable Data & AI Apps
- Moral Design Strategy
Gedurende het twaalf maanden durende project organiseren de partners workshops, matchmakingactiviteiten en gezamenlijke proposal-writing sessies. Het doel is om uitdagingen van Europese mkb-bedrijven te vertalen naar een gedeelde onderzoeksagenda en uiteindelijk te komen tot een sterke subsidieaanvraag binnen Horizon Europe of een vergelijkbaar EU-programma.
European University Alliance HEROES
In beide consortia nemen onderzoekers van HEROES partners deel. Fontys is partner in HEROES [link naar https://heroesuniversity.eu/], een European University Alliance van negen praktijkgerichte hogeronderwijs instellingen verspreid over Europa. Samen werken wij aan de versterking van slimme regionale veerkracht en een inclusieve, duurzame en innovatieve toekomst voor onze regio’s en Europa.
Investeren in Europese samenwerking
Met deze twee toekenningen verstevigt Fontys haar positie binnen het Europese onderzoekslandschap. De projecten dragen bij aan de verdere internationalisering van het praktijkgericht onderzoek en creëren nieuwe kansen voor samenwerking rond grote maatschappelijke uitdagingen, van veerkrachtige gemeenschappen tot duurzame mobiliteit.

Fontys receives SIA funding for two European networking projects
Two Fontys projects have been awarded grants under the Taskforce for Applied Research SIA ‘Network Development Towards Europe 2026’ scheme. With this funding, researchers will build strong European partnerships that will form the basis for future international research projects and European grant applications.
In this funding round, the Taskforce for Applied Research SIA has selected 30 projects aimed at strengthening European research collaboration. Each project will receive up to €40,000 to develop sustainable networks between universities of applied sciences, knowledge institutions, businesses and societal partners across Europe.
The European Community Research Consortium
The European Community Research Consortium project aims to enhance knowledge about communities, community development and community-based research. Communities are playing an increasingly significant role in societal issues such as the energy transition, climate adaptation, urban development and health. The consortium aims to become the leading European multidisciplinary network where knowledge about communities is developed, shared and applied.
Eric Schoenmakers, a senior researcher at the Social Resilience research group is collaborating on this project with Thomas More University of Applied Sciences (Belgium), the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and IRIS-CC. The partners bring together expertise from fields including social sciences, community psychology, public administration and health sciences.
Data-Driven Circular Economy in Electrical Mobility
The second funded project, Data-Driven Circular Economy in Electrical Mobility is building a European practice-oriented research network focused on the circular transition of the electric vehicle (EV) market. However, many SMEs face challenges due to fragmented data sources, limited access to technical information and differing standards among manufacturers. As a result, opportunities for the reuse, repair, refurbishment and recycling of EV components often remain untapped.
Led by Fontys, the consortium brings together research partners from Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Halmstad University (Sweden), Thomas More University of Applied Sciences (Belgium) and Fontys from the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden and Belgium. The network is coordinated by Associate Lector Dr Devrim Eskiyerli and combines the expertise of three Fontys research groups:
- Business Innovation
- Sustainable Data & AI Apps
- Moral Design Strategy
Throughout the twelve-month project, the partners will organise workshops, matchmaking activities and joint proposal-writing sessions. The aim is to translate the challenges faced by European SMEs into a shared research agenda and ultimately to produce a strong grant application under Horizon Europe or a comparable EU programme.
European University Alliance HEROES
Researchers from HEROES partners are participating in both consortia. Fontys is a partner in HEROES [link naar https://heroesuniversity.eu/], a European University Alliance comprising nine practice-oriented higher education institutions across Europe. Together, we are working to strengthen smart regional resilience and build an inclusive, sustainable and innovative future for our regions and Europe.
Investing in European collaboration
With these two grants, Fontys is strengthening its position within the European research landscape. The projects contribute to the further internationalisation of practice-oriented research and create new opportunities for collaboration on major societal challenges, ranging from resilient communities to sustainable mobility.
